Abstract

This study aimed to assess appetite in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients using translated appetite questionnaires, study the correlation between appetite and associated co-morbidities in hemodialysis patients and determine the severity of appetite as a predictor of one year mortality. The present study was conducted on 162 patients with hemodialysis. Patients included in this study were selected from Mansoura Nephrology and Dialysis Unit (MNDU), Mansoura University and Aga Hospital Dialysis Unit. The study was carried out over a period of one year from March 2019 to February 2020. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory characteristics of all patients were collected using special prepared sheet. Patients were evaluated through history taking, appetite assessment, dietary assessment, quality of life questionnaire, anxiety questionnaire and clinical examination. Appetite was assessed using the following appetite assessment tools; subjective assessment of appetite, self-assessment of appetite, visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Functional Assessment of Anorexia/Cachexia Therapy (FAACT) score. Sixty-nine (42.6%) of patients were females and 93 (57.4%) were males. 59 patients (36.4%) had chronic hepatitis C. 44.4% of the cases reported having good appetite using subjective assessment of appetite tool, 13% reported decreased appetite using self-assessment of appetite, median VAS was 80 and FAACT score ranged from 7 to 32 with mean 15.85.
