Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on microtensile bond strength of universal adhesives in self-etch mode to sound and carious dentin of permanent molars.
Materials and Methods: The materials used in this study were: Nano-hybrid packable resin composite, 10-MDP containing adhesive, and silver diamine fluoride. Extracted human molars were used in this study. They were divided according to the dentin substrate into sound and demineralized dentin. Half of the specimens were immersed in a demineralizing solution for 96 hours to induce artificial dentin caries. All the specimens were divided into 4 groups: 1. Sound dentin without SDF, 2. Sound dentin with SDF, 3. Demineralized dentin without SDF, 4. Demineralized dentin with SDF. After SDF treatment, universal adhesive was applied followed by 4 mm composite build-up. After restoration, the specimens were sectioned and submitted to microtensile testing (µTBS). The mode of failure was also investigated. In addition, 4 extra teeth were prepared to examine resin-dentin interface after treatment using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Data was statistically analysed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s Post Hoc test.
Results: Microtensile testing showed that the bond strength of SDF-treated dentin (whether sound or demineralized) to universal adhesives in self-etch mode has dropped significantly compared to dentin without the SDF treatment. The least bond strength values were evident in the ‘demineralized dentin with SDF’ group. The most common type of failure in ‘sound dentin without SDF application’ group was cohesive, while the predominant failure mode in the other 3 groups was adhesive.
