Abstract

The aim of this study is to throw light on the effect of olive oil extract
on the stomach of adult male albino rats with experimentally induced liver
fibrosis by using different histological and immunohistochemical techniques.
This work was carried out on 50 adult male albino rats with their
weights ranged between 180 and 220 grams. The animals were divided into
two main groups, control group I and experimental group II. Control group
included 10 rats which were kept without any medication throughout the
study. Experimental group included 40 rats which were subdivided into 4
equal subgroups (IIa, IIb, IIc and IId). Subgroup IIa received olive oil extract
in a dose of 5 ml/kg body weight daily by orogastric tube for 4 weeks,
subgroup IIb received carbon tetracholoride in a dose of 0.1 ml/100g body
weight by intraperitoneal injection twice per week for 4 weeks, subgroup IIc
received carbon tetrachloride at the same time with the olive oil for 4 weeks
at the same dose and duration in subgroups IIa and IIb. As well as subgroup
IId received carbon tetrachloride for 4 weeks then olive oil was given alone
for another 4 weeks as the same dose in subgroups IIa and IIb.
At the end of the exiperiment, all rats were sacrificed. The liver and the
stomach were obtained and subjected for different stains as Haematoxylin &
Eosin and Masson’s trichrome for both liver and stomach specimens.
Additional stains were done for the stomach as Periodic acid Schiff (PAS),
and immunohistochemical staining for Caspase 3. Statistical analysis were
performed to evaluate the mean area percentage of collagen fibers content,
the mean surface mucus area and the mean color intensity of Caspase 3
reaction in the stomach.
