Abstract

Radiation-induced oral mucositis ”RIOM” is a normal tissues injury that is caused by radiotherapy in cancer patients especially head and neck cancers. This result in oral ulcerations, inflammation of mucosal tissues thus decreasing the quality of life in these patients. As a conventional approach, symptomatic treatments are being used to deal with the pain and ulcers resulting from oral mucositis as there is no definitive preventive or therapeutic treatment. Recently, the use of topical oral Vitamin D gel gains a great interest in dealing with oral mucositis due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.
Aim of the study: To clinically evaluate the effectiveness of topical oral vitamin D gel in prevention of radiation induced oral mucositis.
Materials and Methods: The study will be conducted on forty-five patients who are going to receive radiotherapy. Patients will be divided into three groups: group I: Fifteen patients will be given conventional treatment, group II: Fifteen patients will be given topical oral vitamin D gel, and group III: Fifteen patients will be given topical oral vitamin D gel in addition to conventional treatment. All patients will be clinically evaluated directly after first session of radiotherapy, three weeks and six weeks later for pain and oral mucositis severity.
Results: Results will be assessed using the appropriate statistical tests.
