Abstract

In the past, people enjoyed self-sufficiency in their daily lives. They used land for agriculture as a source for food. That is to say, the traditional village concept was for people to grow their crops together and breed their own livestock. The development of their food stocks through simple techniques and practical training on daily activities created a distinctive character and an economic base.
Recently, with the modern trend towards the use of technology and its applications in life, this modern use should be combined with an awareness of the concept of self-sufficiency for the following reasons: 1) the human encroachment on natural resources; 2) the increase in population density; and 3) the increasing food prices; which eventually leads us to live in a more self-sufficient way.
An agriculture based community is a community that can benefit from the concept of self-sufficiency, as it enjoys agricultural lands, natural resources as well as the concepts of sharing and cooperation which is fundamental to villages. Hence, the informal growth on agricultural lands causes the government’s inability to fulfill the needs of the increasing population.
In this context, this current study aims at combining the concept of self-sufficiency into the devolvement strategies of informal areas’ hotbeds as a new approach to enhance the effectiveness of those areas through the following: 1) maximizing the benefits of community resources and residents craft; 2) solving the current urban problems in accordance with the actual needs of their residents; 3) contributing to a comprehensive renaissance of these areas; and 4) reducing the burdens on the government with regard to fulfilling the needs of their people.
