Abstract

Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology gained a noticeable development interest at a worldwide scale as a reliable supplement to Radio Frequency (RF) technology because of its ability to achieve additional merits, such as: power consumption reduction, higher operating system rates, enhanced throughput, flicker-free operation, enhanced dimming control range and levels, and system complexity reduction. VLC technology is suitable of many applications, such as data localization, Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) sensitive environments like aircraft, high speed-video streaming, traffic control systems, underwater data transmission, and Internet of things (IoT) applications.
VLC transmitters and receivers are illumination devices that are enabled and modified for high-speed data transmission, based on simple Intensity Modulation / Direct Detection (IM/DD) techniques, but these techniques performance degreases due to the effect of Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) and their performance degraded severely at high data rates.
Hence, utilizing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) was introduced as a reliable solution that can enhance the system performance.
In this thesis, we present and investigate a proposed indoor VLC system dimmable control schemes combining Sub Carrier Pulse Position Modulation (SC-LPPM) which is a variant of the Pulse Modulation (PPM) scheme, and Variable Pulse Position Modulation (VPPM), Color Shift Keying (CSK) as IEEE 802.15.7 standard main schemes, with OFDM under the assumption of a LOS environment .
These schemes are compared with conventional combination schemes that utilizes Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Multiple Pulse Position Modulation (MPPM) with M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation OFDM (M-QAM OFDM).
The proposed schemes are investigated for distinctive and uniform lighting topologies, which will present a remarkable performance of utilizing SC-LPPM with M-QAM OFDM at every aspect of the evaluation process. Followed by an illumination study to estimate the efficiency of the proposed scheme under a LOS environment assumption.
Moreover, to overcome the limitations of the operating data rates of SC- LPPM scheme and by taking advantage of combining SC- LPPM with M-QAM OFDM, a performance evaluation to the BER and power performance after increasing the operating data rates will be presented under distinctive and uniform lighting topologies assumption.
