Abstract Summary The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational program on nurse`s performance regarding care of comatose patients. The design of this study was quasi experimental research design. This study was carried out in emergency care unit. Moreover, this study was conducted to test the research hypotheses that the post mean knowledge scores and practices scores of nurses who are receiving educational program higher than pre mean knowledge and practices scores ,there is Positive relation existing between knowledge and practice scores . A convenience sample of all available nurses (35 nurses) who participating in care of patients with coma. Two tools were utilized to collect data pertinent to the study, which are: Tool I pre/post knowledge assessment. Tool II: pre/post observational checklist. The main results: Findings of the present study revealed that there were a statistically significant difference in the total mean Knowledge level obtained by nurses in pre, post implementing of educational program and follow up after three months. There was a statistically significant difference in the total mean nurse`s practice level in pre, post implementing of educational program and follow up after three months. There was positive correlation has been founded between knowledge score and performance score in pre-test, post-test and follow-up. There were no statistical significant difference between pre-program and post program groups regarding all parameter of complication for comatose patients. It can conclude that nurse`s knowledge and practice regarding care for patient with coma in emergency care unit at Assiut university hospital are inadequate. Implementing the teaching program on nurse`s knowledge and skills training shows a significant improvement in nurse`s knowledge and practice. Recommendations are suggested for nurses: 1- Continued nursing education and in service training programs in emergency care unit should be well organized at Assiut university hospital and equipped with the necessary educational facilities and materials necessary to upgrade the knowledge and skills of practicing nurses, which will be reflected on better outcome and service for inpatients. For patients: Recommendations are suggested The multidisciplinary approach must be used in caring for patients with coma. Available resources should include the patient, the patient`s family, the nurse, and other nursing staff. |
