Abstract Summary Many cancer patients in the terminal phase of their illness suffering from reduced oral intake due to causes related to their illness or its treatment when oral intake is not adequate, so researcher was conducted this study to design implement nursing management for terminal cancer patients undergoing parenteral fluid. And evaluate the effect of nursing management on improving manifestations of terminal cancer patients undergoing parenteral fluid. Study design: A quasi-experimental design was used to this study which conducted at internal medical oncology department at South Egypt CancerInstitute. Study subject: Sixty adult terminal cancer patients of both gender between 18 65 years; divided equally into two groups;(study andcontrol groups) (30 patients for each group) admitted in Medical department atSouth Egypt Cancer Institute . The aims of this study were in there folds: 1-To design implement nursing management for terminal cancer patients undergoing parenteral fluid. 2-To evaluate the effect of nursing management on improving manifestations of terminal cancer patients undergoing parenteral fluid. To accomplish these aims; data were collected using the following tools were utilized for data collection Tool (I): An structured interview questionnaire: This questionnaire was developed by the researcher based on literature review. This tool included two parts: Part (1): Demographic data: such as: Gender, age, marital status, weight, height, address, occupation level of education …….etc. Part (2): Patient medical data: as medical diagnosis, medical treatment, medical history as; (diabetes ,hypertension) ,post - surgical history, laboratory investigations ……… etc . Tool (II): pre/post patient assessment: this tool consisted of three parts: Part (1): patient knowledge: This tool aimed to assess terminal cancer patient knowledge about physical manifestation in end stage cancer management (including management of ascites , nausea , vomiting , edema…etc.). Part (2): Physical manifestation assessment: This tool aimed to assess patient physical state , it consist of ; (assessment of dehydration ,assessment of nausea vomiting ,assessment of ascites assessment of edema ) . Part (3): Psychological manifestation assessment: This tool aimed to assess patient psychological state ,it consist of; ( delirium assessment ,anxiety assessment) . Main finding of the present study were: Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that: The highest percentage for both groups their age ranged from (>50 to 65) years old. All of them were married, and half of them (50%) were illiterate There was a statistical significant deference for the patient in the study group regarding psychological manifestation assessment in post -testincluding delirium grade anxiety grade P<0.05. There was a statistical significant deference for the patient in the study group regarding physical manifestations in post- testincluding dehydration degree P<0.05, edema degree, nausea, vomiting and ascites P<0.001. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups pretest regarding their total knowledge scores. Appositive correlations between study group total physical psychological scores after application of the nursing management protocol. |
