Abstract Stroke is a sudden alteration of the brain function due to disruption of brain blood supply as a result of occlusion which called Ischemic stroke (87%) or hemorrhage (13%) that leads to brain cell damage as well as the loss of function of the affected side (21, 22). The term ”brain attack” was used by the National Stroke Association (NSA) to describe stroke and referred to the importance of emergency or immediate treatment like ”heart attack” to prevent permanent disability and death. According to the NSA (2016) (23, 24) stroke is a burden disease that may occur suddenly to any person at any age and leads to long term disability. Acute stroke is a medical emergency in which the longer blood flow to the brain is interrupted, so the greater chance of permanent brain damage, disability, or death is high because within minutes, brain cells begin to die and two million brain cells die every minute .Ischemic stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is decreased, leading to dysfunction of the brain tissue in that area (25). Figure (1) Ischemic stroke (25) Types of acute ischemic stroke Ischemic stroke is divided into two types of strokes including(26): • An embolic stroke occurs when an embolus, which is a blood clot or a piece of plaque, or another object, forms somewhere else in the body and travels to the brain’s blood vessels. The heart is the primary source where clots develop and travel to the brain. • A thrombotic stroke occurs when a thrombus or clot forms inside the blood vessels of the brain (27). |
