Abstract

6-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-2,5-dioxo-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrano[3,2-c] quinoline-3-carboxaldehyde was synthesized as a ligand and reacted with Cu(II) metal ion with different anions (OAc–, NO3–, SO42–, ClO4–, Cl– and Br–) in absence and presence of auxiliary ligands (L′); N,O-donor; or N,N-donor such as 8-hydroxyquinoline, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2’-bipyridyl. Also, the ligand was allowed to react with a variety of metal ions such as manganese (II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), chromium(III), iron(III), cerium(III), oxovanadium(IV) and dioxouranium(VI). The obtained results showed that the ligand behaves as a neutral/monoanionic bidentate, forming chelates with molar ratio 1:1, (M:L). The metal complexes were fully characterized by analytical and spectral techniques in addition to thermal, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The metal complexes exhibited square planar, tetrahedral, pentagonal bipyramidal and octahedral geometrical arrangements according to the nature of the anion. The ligand and its metal complexes showed antimicrobial activity towards Gram–positive bacteria, Gram–negative bacteria, yeast and fungus. Also, the prepared compounds were screened for their anticancer activity.
