Abstract

It is important to predict space required and space available for unerupted canine and premolars in the arch. This is very important regarding orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. It helps in determining whether treatment plan is going to involve serial extractions, eruption guidance, regaining of space, space maintenance, or simple observation of patient for the time period is required The purpose of this study was to evaluate the size of unerupted canines and premolars using Boston University approach in comparison to Tanaka and Johnston analysis in a sample of Egyptian children from Tanta city The sample enrolled in this study consisted of 300 children (150 boys and 150 girls) with an average age (7-10) years with existence of primary maxillary and mandibular canines and primary first molars and eruption of all permanent mandibular incisors, free from caries, restoration or any abnormalities in size, shape or structure of teeth. The MDWs of the required from which widths of permanent canines and premolars were predicted using both Tanaka and Johnston analysis and Boston University approach which is mesiodistal widths of permanent mandibular canines and premolars = MDW of primary mandibular canines + 2 (MDW of primary mandibular first molar) for each side and mesiodistal widths of permanent maxillary canines and premolars = MDW of primary maxillary canines + 2 (MDW of primary maxillary first molar) for each side.
