Abstract

Self-directed learning (SDL) for lifelong learning is an essential attribute for nursing students. The rapidly developing healthcare system presents nurses with a significant challenge to keep abreast by absorbing new knowledge to maintain professional competence, enhance their professional growth and provision of quality patient care. Aim: This study aims to design and validate educational booklet about self-directed learning for nursing students. Research design: A Cross sectional design was used. Methods: The study sample composed of two groups: namely academic expert group (15) from different academic Faculty of Nursing departments and nursing students’ group (300) from four levels choose by sample size at Faculty of Nursing, Mansoura University. Data were collected by using four tools as: Students’ perception about self-directed learning questionnaire, self-directed learning readiness scale, students’ preferences for strategies to facilitate self-directed learning questionnaire and educational booklet evaluation checklist. Results: The study finding revealed that more than half of nursing students were high perception about SDL. As well, the proposed educational booklet was agreed upon its content and face validity by all of academic jury experts and nursing students. Conclusion: The proposed educational booklet about SDL was agreed upon its content and face validity by all of jury experts and nursing students. Recommendation: Encourages college policymakers to set policy for SDL in nursing curricula. Promote self-directed learning as a central strategy for developing competency of the nursing students in the clinical practice which emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving.
