Abstract Our study aimed to evaluate the role of serum hepcidin and reticulocyte hemoglobin concentration (CHr) in evaluation of anemia in ulcerative colitis patients. A total of 80 adult patients with UC (50 patients with anemia as group I and 30 without anemia as group II) were prospectively drawn from outpatient clinic and inwards of Internal Medicine Department of Tanta University Hospital and 30 healthy individuals of matched age and sex as controls. Inclusion criteria Patients with ulcerative colitis and the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was based on clinical symptoms, physical examination, laboratory tests, colonoscopy and histopathologic assessment of biopsy samples. The severity of UC was established according to Truelove and Witts UC criteria (11). No one of our studied patients received blood transfusion or iron therapy. Exclusion criteria 1) Patients with malignancy. 2) Patients with systemic infection. 3) Patients with chronic kidney disease. 4) Patients with chronic liver disease. 5) Patients with serious cardiopulmonary diseases. 6) Pregnant females. |
