Abstract

As cancer become one of the diseases that most widespread and virulent, chemotherapy and other conventional treatments become without avail in all cases of cancer , have severe side effects and resistance of cancer cells to treatment for long time . Several numbers of medical herbs have found and can be held as an effective anti-cancer therapy. Natural products are characterized by anti-oxidants and non-toxic action and low cost treatment.
Therefore, this investigation aimed to evaluate cytotoxicity effect of lutein as natural product isolated from alfalfa plant on varied cancer cell lines (human cell lines) additionally evaluate cytotoxicity effect of lutein on normal cell line.
The main outcomes of this investigation could be summed up as follows:
1. The antiproliferative effect of lutein that isolated from alfalfa was tested by SRB assay .SRB assay screen the cytotoxicity or the anti-proliferative activity of lutein on the five dissimilar cancer cell lines (liver HepG2, breast MCF-7, lung A549, prostate PC3 and colon HCT116) additionally, normal HFB4 cells in comparison with doxorubicin as a reference drug. The attained results revealed the following :
a. Lutein have a strong antiproliferative activity on breast MCF-7 cell line similar to doxorubicin
b. Lutein have a moderate activity on liver HepG2 compared to doxorubicin
c. Lutein have no effect on (lung A549, prostate PC3 and colon HCT116) cell lines versus to doxorubicin
d. Surprisingly, lutein have no act on normal HFB4 cells, so lutein is a safe compound.
