Abstract

Although wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is considered the relevant
technology to cope with the remarkable growth of the internet protocols and
multimedia applications, it suffers from the nonlinear transmission
impairments, especially for long-haul WDM networks. This thesis studies in
details two dominant nonlinear effects, namely; four-wave mixing (FWM) and
stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). A mathematical model for a typical
WDM network is introduced. The performance analysis is investigated taking
into consideration the main parameters including the transmitted power,
frequency separation, transmission fiber length, and various fiber types.
Theoretical results show that the nonlinear phenomenon has a detrimental
influence on the system performance and the dominant nonlinear effect is
interchangeable between FWM and SRS depending on the assigned frequency
of each user in the network. In addition, a channel allocation method is
assessed as an effective technique to reduce the deleterious effect of the
nonlinear impairments. Finally, the simulation of a WDM network is
performed by OptiSystem software to verify some theoretical aspects.
