The concept of self-confidence is one of the concepts that have been studied by many psychologists and attracted the interest of researchers in the educational and social aspects alike, which made us shed light on it in this research, discuss it in detail, and learn about the effect of enhancing confidence in developing the social competence of students, in general, and preparatory school students, in particular, because the transition from home environment to school environment represents an important turning point in the life of every student, not only on the psychological level, but on the social level as well. The student shall have sufficient social competence.
Study problem:
The loss of self-confidence for preparatory school students generates a feeling of inferiority and negative behavioral manifestations characterized by hesitation, as the individual finds it difficult to stick to a certain behavior, as well as to adopt a special direction permanently, as he/ she finds it difficult to make decisions on his/her own without the help of others, as the student tends to have excessive shyness, so he/ she finds it difficult to face people. The loss of confidence also leads the student to feel doubt about himself and the intentions of the people towards him as well. The students enrolled in schools, who lack self-confidence, find it difficult to form the social relations which are supposed to be successful and effective in forming their social identity and helping them achieve the desired social compatibility. Therefore, through the above and by looking at the social reality of these students, as well as observing their interaction with their colleagues inside the educational buildings during the school day, the researcher was able to reach the study problem and define it precisely:
Importance of the study
First: the theoretical importance:
The importance of this research lies in the aspect it deals with and in providing the Arab library with an important study in the field of self-confidence, as self-confidence is an important factor in achieving many goals and reaching them and in achieving success.
Second: Application importance:
The results of this research can be used in a practical way in the areas of, educational counseling and guidance, positive behavior and increasing the ability to exploit personal capabilities. It may also have a preventive value represented in identifying those who suffer from loss of self-confidence and inferiority complex; and helping them develop these aspects, improve their social compatibility and increase their social competence.
Objectives of the study:
The study aims to the following:.
1- To verify / check the effectiveness of a program based on selective guidance in enhancing self-confidence and its impact on social competence.
2- To learn about the extent of the continuity of the effectiveness of the selective guidance program in enhancing self-confidence and improving students’ social competence.
Study methodology:
In the current study, the researcher relied on the experimental method in experimental research and the use of a one-group design, which is the experimental group.
Study sample:
1- Study population:
The study was conducted on a sample of students of the Coptic Preparatory School for Boys in Beni Suef City, Beni Suef Governorate, whose ages ranged between (13-15) years, where the total number of students in this school ranged, from the first to the third preparatory grade, (440) students, and all of them were males. The researcher tested the study sample and the target groups from among them, and excluded the non-target ones.
2- Sample of psychometric properties calculation:
The sample of calculating the psychometric characteristics consisted of (200) preparatory school students, who were chosen from among the Coptic Preparatory School for Boys, in order to calculate the psychometric characteristics of the two study measures.
3- Pilot study sample:
The sample of the pilot study consisted of (70) preparatory school students of the Coptic Preparatory School for Boys in Beni Suef City, Beni Suef Governorate, and their ages ranged between (13-15) years.
4- Experimental study sample:
The sample of the pilot experimental consisted of (30) students, all of them males, and all of them were preparatory school students who were targeted for the study.
5- Follow-up study sample:
The follow-up study was conducted on the same sample of the experimental study, which consisted of (30) preparatory school students who were targeted for the study.
Study tools:
The objectives of the study can only be achieved through the appropriate means that are used in that study and that enable the researcher to test his/ her hypotheses. Therefore, the researcher used the following tools:
1- Self-confidence scale (prepared by Sidney Shrouger, and translated by Adel Abdullah)
2- Social Competence Scale (prepared by the researcher)
3- Selective counseling program to enhance self-confidence (prepared by the researcher).
The statistical processing methods used in the study:
The data was entered through the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS), and the researcher approved the statistical processing methods of the data obtained on the following statistical methods:
T-test
- Pearson correlation coefficient
- SMA
- Standard deviation
Results:
1- There are statistically significant differences at the level of significance (0.01) between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre and post application on the self-confidence scale, in favor of the post application.
2- There are no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the post and follow-up measurements on the scale of self-confidence
3- There are statistically significant differences at the level of significance (0.01) between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre and post application on the Social Competence Scale, in favor of the post application.
4- There are no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the post and follow-up measurements on the Social Competence Scale.
Study recommendations:
1- Emphasizing the need to pay attention to the counseling aspect and designing counseling programs in dealing with the problems that our students encounter, especially those problems that preparatory school students encounter, such as their low self-confidence and low social competence.
2- Working on paying attention to various activities and programs that enhance the level of self-confidence of preparatory school students, as it is the main factor for academic success and success in life, in general.
3- Holding courses and meetings, for teachers and specialists working in schools, on how to develop students’ self-confidence.
4- Directing the attention of educators and all community institutions to educating young people and maximizing the strengths and positive aspects of their personality, which contributes to improving their self-confidence and raising their social competence rate.
5- The need to reveal the students who suffer from low self-confidence in schools and working to develop their self-confidence by using the activities prepared for this purpose.
Further studies:
1- Conducting the study on another sample that includes different age groups in different regions with the aim of investigating the generalization of the results.
2- Conducting other studies dealing with the self-confidence of preparatory school students and their relationship to other variables.
3- The effect of a training program to develop self-confidence in increasing the level of academic achievement of preparatory school students.
4- Studying the differences between best learners and ordinary ones in self-confidence and social competence.
