Abstract

Wounds are physical injuries that results in an opening and break of the
skin that cause disturbance in the normal skin anatomy and function. They result in the loss of continuity of epithelium with or without the loss of underlying connective tissue. (Tottoli et al., 2020)
The current interest is focused on an alternative and conventional therapies
as honey, antimicrobial moisture-retentive dressings, essential oils and cationic
peptides, topical enzymes, bio surgical therapies, and vacuum therapies.
Honey dressing is more effective as compared to other alternative dressing
in achieving complete healing, reducing wound surface area and pain, and
increasing patients’ comfort. (Sarkar et al., 2018)
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of honey dressing on
open wound healing, patient satisfaction and length of hospitalization among
surgical patients.
Setting The study was conducted at General surgical department of Menoufia
university hospital. This department locate in the emergency hospital and divided into two sections one for males and other for females. Each of them consists of four rooms and one isolation room. Each room contain six beds and the isolated
room contain two beds. The department has two nursing room one at male
section& other at female section and has supplies room.
Subject
A convenience sample of 90 adult patients of both sexes with open wound
was selected and assigned alternatively and randomly into two equal groups.
Study group: Those patients who dressed by honey. Dressing was
changed daily and the wound will be assessed at the7, 14, 21day of using honey
dressing to monitor wound healing.
Control group: Those patients who was treated by traditional dressing
according to hospital policy and the wound was assessed at the7, 14, 21day to
monitor wound healing.
Instruments of the study: for data collection three tools were utilized
Instrument I: Structural interview questionnaire.
Instrument II: Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool.
Instrument III: Patient’s Satisfaction Assessment Sheet.
The main findings of the present study were
 There was significant improvement of wound healing among the study
group who dressed with honey dressing than control group who treated
with routine hospital care.
 There was significant decrease in the length of hospital stay among study
group than control group.
 Honey dressing was significantly increase patients satisfaction among
study group.
Conclusion& Recommendation
 The honey dressing was safe and effective on wound healing and didn’t
cause any side effects.
 Honey dressing accelerate wound healing and decease length of hospital
stay. Honey dressing increase patients satisfaction.
o Honey dressing should be used as an alternative therapy for wound
healing as it safe, cost effective, accelerate wound healing and
promote patient comfort.
o Honey dressing are available to the patient and increase patient’s
satisfaction and decrease length of hospital stay.
o Honey dressing should be carried out for all different types of wound
to promote wound healing, patient satisfaction and decrease length of
stay.
