Abstract Results: Twenty-six females and 4 males with mean age 52 ±SD 12 years were enrolled. Following three consecutive PRP injections, there was significant improvement WOMAC and VAS after injection (p <0.001). There was statistically significant lower sub articular bone marrow abnormalities score (p 0.005) and significant higher maximal thickening of patellar cartilage (p 0.031) after PRP injections. VAS percent reduction was significantly higher (p <0.001) in grade 2 OA and negatively correlated to the disease duration (p 0.024). Conclusion: PRP injection may give hopeful results in treating OA. Patients with shorter disease duration and low OA grade may have better benefits than those with longer disease duration and/or advanced disease grade. Further studies with more patients and randomized double blinded controlled studies are recommended to confirm results, evaluate the long term effect of PRP injection in knee OA, and compare between and different protocols of PRP injections. |
