Abstract Oral mucositis is a common debilitating complication of cancer treatment that has no definitive approved treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate Se efficacy in the prevention of RIOM. A randomized controlled clinical study was conducted on 40 HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy at the Department of Clinical Oncology, Alexandria University, Egypt. Patients were assigned equally to either control group who received conventional preventive medications or test group who received Se supplementation along with the conventional preventive medications. All patients were clinically evaluated for OM severity (objective assessment) and pain (subjective assessment) at day 1 of radiotherapy, day 14, day21 and day42. The results of the study revealed that there were no significant differences comparing control and test groups regarding severity of O.M. And mean pain score during the 4 times of assessment according to WHO scale and VAS scale respectively. |
