Abstract

Patient falls are the most common adverse event in intensive care unit, resulting in devastating physical, psychological and financial consequences, and are, without a doubt, one of the biggest risks of hospital care and result in severe complications. The factors affect patient fall can be both intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic risk factors related to the individual such as higher age, disturbed gait, (abnormal gait considers important cause for falling in Neuro-Intensive care units (NICU) and is categorized as one of five types based on the symptoms or appearance of an individual’s walk. They are: spastic gait, scissors gait, steppage gait, waddling gait, propulsive gait. Falls assessment and prevention is a key priority. Falls have contributed to major injuries, some resulting in death, among patients admitted to acute care hospitals. Fall prevention is a main concern among healthcare institutions since providing quality and safe care is their primary goal. As healthcare systems continue to adopt and implement fall prevention strategies, nurses play a critical role in implementing fall prevention procedures in the acute care setting. The hallmark of most fall prevention strategies is risk identification People with neurological disorders are often characterized by motor dysfunction and imbalance leading to risk of falls and impacting on participation in activities of daily living. Nurse’s role starts form the early prevention to the rehabilitation of falls and further follow up and evaluation. Nurses, as the professionals responsible for performing assessments upon admission to the hospital, are in an optimal position to identify patients at risk and implement fall prevention programs. Involving this group of professionals (including their leaders) in a culture of responsibility, and improving their training in preventive programs, allows very positive results to be obtained. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect implementing fall prevention strategies on nurses’ performance at Neurological Intensive Care Units Research design: A quasi- experimental design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was be conducted at Neurological Intensive Care Units in Neurological medical center, in Tanta Main University Hospital. Subjects: The subjects of this study was consist of all nurses (50) both sex, working and direct caring for neurological patients in neurological intensive care unit in the previous mentioned setting. Tools of data collection: - Two tools were used to collect data, these tools included the following: Tool (I) Nurses knowledge and demographic characteristic: This structured questionnaire was be developed by the researcher after reviewing related literature to collect -demographic data of nurses and nurses knowledge This tool was include two parts: Part I: -Demographic characteristics of nurses it includes: age, sex, marital status, years of experience, level of education, and previous education program, workshops about fall prevention Part II: Nurses knowledge regarding falls in neurological disorder patients, covered the following: individual factors, health factors, environmental factors, and other factors, fall prevention strategies, and risk of falls on the patient.
