Abstract VTE remains a problematic complication for the acute care setting, especially for the major orthopedic surgical patients which can cause high morbidity and even mortality. It comprises deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The VTE is a major cause of death during the first three months after surgery. The DVT is a major medical problem characterized by thrombi formation in the deep venous system and can result in a fatal PE. This problem occurs most commonly in the legs, although thrombi can also form in the veins of the arms as well. Prevention of VTE is more important and cost effective than treatment, because once DVT develops; it can only be cured at considerable expense. Since the diagnosis is difficult and also the treatment is not always satisfactory, the prevention of DVT is obviously essential. Prevention of DVT is the effective approach to reduce death from PE and morbidity from DVT. Prevention decreases length of hospital stay, improves quality of life, decreases rehabilitation time and decreases economic burden. Orthopedic nurses play an important role in the detection, treatment and prevention of DVT among post major orthopedic surgery patients because those patients are needed for nursing interventions for DVT prevention as integral part of nursing care standards (NCSs). An awareness of all aspects of DVT is vital in providing optimal nursing care for patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery in order to improve patients’ outcome, reduce the incidence and potentially life threatening complications of DVT. The present study aimed to: Assess nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding prevention of venous thromboembolism among post major orthopedic surgery Patients. Materials and methods: Research Design: A descriptive research design was utilized for this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the inpatient orthopedic surgery departments of Hadara Orthopedic and Traumatology University Hospital, Alexandria. This hospital provides services for 3 governorates (Alexandria, Elbehera and Matrouh). The inpatient orthopedic surgery departments is composed of 5 main units, 2 for males (A and B) and 2 for females (A and B) and one unit for accidents. Unit A in both males and females is divided into (a, c and e) wards which consist of 56 beds for females and 56 beds for males. Unit B in both males and females is divided into (b and d) wards which contain 42 beds (38 for patients with non-septic wounds and 4 for patients with septic wounds), for males and a same number for females. The accidents unit contains 22 beds. |
