Abstract

Thyroid gland is one of the most important glands in the human body as it regulates majority of the body’s physiological actions. The liver represents one of the main target tissues for thyroid hormones; the potent hormones that modulate liver lipid and glucose homeostasis. Thyroid dysfunctions are frequently associated with hepatic lipid and glucose alterations. Primary hypothyroidism is the second most common endocrine disorder after diabetes mellitus. Recently, some clinical studies suggested that hypothyroidism is closely associated with NAFLD, the most common chronic liver disease independently of known metabolic risk factors. However, the direct effect of induced hypothyroidism on NAFLD progression and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this association remains unclear.
