Abstract

The global industrial rampage has led to an unprecedented dissemination of toxic substances in the environment. Exposure to these pollutants especially through dietary intake of plant-derived food and beverages, drinking water, or air can have long-term effects on human health (Chaffei et al., 2004, Godt et al., 2006 and Jarup & Akesson 2009). Among the pollutants, metals are of utmost concern due to the potential impact of contaminated foodstuffs consumption on humans (Commission Regulation EC 466/ 2001 and Costa et al., 2011) and consequent health hazard. Despite their natural sources, human activity is largely responsible for their abnormal release and accumulation in the environment (Hu et al., 2017). Due to industrialization, or injudicious applications of agrochemicals, which show a big load of metals, the amounts of heavy metals deposited onto the surface of the Earth are however many times greater than depositions from natural background sources (Mohammed et al., 2011 and Ayangbenro & Babalola, 2017 ).
