Abstract

Accuracy in estimation of gestational age (GA) has become more demanding as technology used in ultrasonography has become more advanced. Patient’s expectations have also increased and they expect exact estimations to plan their pregnancies.
Fetal kidney length (FKL) alone or in combination with other biometric indices can be used in estimating GA more precisely.
An accurate estimation of gestational age is fundamental for better management of pregnancy, especially high-risk pregnancy. It is helpful in pregnancy to know the certain date of conception.
Sonographic measurements of fetal parameters are the basis for accurate determination of gestational age and detection of fetal growth abnormalities .Selection of the most useful single biometric parameter depends on the timing and purpose of measurement and is influenced by various factors where in second & third trimester kidney length estimation was much better to depend upon as a single parameter than BPD which is much affected by engaged head & also better than AC that is affected by IUGR.
Establishing the gestational age of the fetus, especially in late trimester is a challenge to aptly treat the pregnant woman. Ultrasound parameters like BPD, HC, and AC & FL in second and third trimesters are not very reliable for dating the pregnancy.
In our study we concluded about 120 pregnant women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and women who did not fulfil the inclusion criteria were excluded from the study. We compared the gestational age derived from the regression equation from Femur Length and Mean Fetal kidney length in regarding to the gold standard method of estimation the gestational age which is early ultrasound scan and dating between 7-11 weeks of gestation using the Crown Rump Length CRL. And we found that gestational age from FL has an accuracy of ± 1.04 weeks (standard error of estimate [standard deviation of residuals] = 1.04 weeks) and good overall fit (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.869). And the gestational age from MKL has an accuracy of ± 0.82 weeks (standard error of estimate [standard deviation of residuals] = 0.82 weeks) and good overall fit (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.918)
So, fetal kidney length has been studied and shown to strongly correlate with the gestational age in late trimesters.
