Abstract

The objective of this work is to determine the antimicrobial potential of Arctium lappa L. (Burdock) extract against some of human pathogenic bacteria which are five Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp. and Burkholderia cepacia) and five Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis). The shoot of A. lappa was dried, ground and extracted by two solvents (ethanol and water). The efficacy of these extracts was tested against those bacteria using agar-well diffusion method. According to the findings of the antibacterial assay, the used ethanol extract of A. lappa acquired antibacterial activity against the tested Gram-positive bacteria, whereas the Gramnegative bacteria ones were resistant to extract except Burkholderia cepacia. The presence of A. lappa extract in culture media decreased the growth and protein content of the affected bacterial strains and caused expression and disappearance of different protein bands. On another hand, A. lappa ethanolic compared with water extract showed greater cytotoxic effect against five cancer cell lines (lung, breast, prostate, liver and colon). On the basis of the present finding, A. lappa extract might be a good material in the search for a natural antimicrobial and anticancer agent. This study provides scientific understanding to further determine of the antimicrobial and anticancer values and to investigate other pharmacological properties.
