Abstract

This research investigates the advantages of using of external active
confinement to improve the compression load capacity of concrete columns
(circular and square sections) by using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) the
confined reinforced concrete (RC) columns used in a wide range. And many
experimental and theoretical studies have done for understanding its behaviour,
but these studies hinge on made the confinement process before loading. In this
paper, confinement the R.C columns using carbon fibre reinforced polymer
(CFRP) are making under different values of service loads is studied.
Ten tested R.e. columns divided to five tested circular RC columns (150 mm
diameters and 1500 mm length) and five tested squared RC column columns
(150*150 cross section and 1500mm length). The two un-strengthen tested RC
column ( one square and anther circular) and The two strengthen tested RC
column ( one square and’anther circular) and two groups of tested confined RC
columns with CFRP are the following; The first group has the three circular full
tested confined RC columns with CFRP sheet and the confinement process done
at 70%, 80%, and 90% of control tested RC columns. The second group has the
three square full tested confined RC columns with CFRP sheet and the
confinement process done at 70%, 80%, and 90% of control tested RC columns.
from analysis the tested results, reduction in the capacity of confined RC
columns happened with confinement under load service load. The rate of
reduction increased with increasing in service load during confinement process.
The new proposal equation calculated capacity of confined RC column takes the
effect of service load values during confinement process into consideration is
offered.!t was found that confining the concrete did produce an increase in
compressive strength. However, the different levels of pre-stress used had no
significant effect on strength but did Influence the confined concrete stress-
strain behavior with greater lateral stresses at peak strength observed.
