Abstract

Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder. Persons with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations, delusions, disorganized behaviors, negative symptoms and disturbance in social functioning. Aim of the work: to determine rate of Medication adherence in a sample of schizophrenic patients and assessment of relation between clinical characteristics of the patients and adherence to treatment. Patients and Methods: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 500 patients with schizophrenia, both male and females who are admitted as an inpatients or follow-up as outpatients in El Khanka Mental Health Hospital. Results: A sample of 520 patients with schizophrenia was studied. On the basis of the MARS results, 402 (77.3%) patients were medication adherent and 118 (22.7%) patients were non-adherent. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the insight, age at illness onset and general functioning were positive predictors of adherence whereas the severity of symptoms and ad adverse effects of neuroleptic medications were negative predictors of adherence. Conclusion: Current study revealed that there was a correlation between medication adherence and marital state, employment state, socioeconomic level, substance use, current setting, type of schizophrenia, age of onset, number of hospitalization, total years of hospitalization, adverse effects, symptoms severity, insight, general functioning and care giver level of education
