Abstract

Creativity and the process of its assessment remains one of the most controversial issues facing many design disciplines. (Williams et al., 2010) discussed in their research that the problem of creativity assessment still remain a disputed issues among practitioners, and especially in the field of architecture design. (Yuan & Lee, 2014) discussed that many researches have introduced methods for measuring and assessing creativity in product design. However, since these assessment methods depend on the subjective analysis of the qualities and attributes of creativity in design, these methods were considered unreliable and lacks validity and credibility. This study aims to formulate a framework that would be used to objectively assess creativity in Architecture design projects. Research methodology included performing an analytical literature review for the definitions of creativity in the design domain, determining the previously used assessment methods and grading models in architecture design and examining the various phases and components of a project in an architecture design studio. A statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between various design approaches and different building types in architecture. Then, a case study was conducted were a proposed assessment method was introduced and its results were examined and analyzed against that of the holistic assessment method.
Results indicate that the holistic assessment methods provide prove of being highly subjective and depends on the assessor’s tacit criteria in assessing the architecture project. While the proposed framework produced more validated result which relates to student’s performance in both the creative and design component as well as the drawings and programmatic aspects component.
