Abstract

Background: Total Quality Management is a modern management philosophy, established due to the development of all aspects of life in today’s world. Aim: The current aim is to assess nurses’ awareness regarding the challenges and requirements for applying total quality management at Main Assuit University Hospital. Research design: Descriptive research design. Setting: The study was conducted at Main Assuit University Hospital. Subjects: A convenience sample of head nurses and staff nurses that worked in (General Surgical, Special Surgical, General Medical and Special Medical Departments) with total number (no=219). Tool of data collection: one tool was used as total quality management scale. Results: The highest mean scores are in quality application requirements (174.96 ± 23.96); followed by challenges (99.49 ± 17.00); then quality management concepts (80.73 ± 10.58); and reasons for applying quality (32.05 ± 4.90). Conclusion: There is a statistically significant correlation between reasons for applying quality and quality management concepts and there are positive correlations between reasons for applying quality, quality management concepts, quality application requirements, (leadership, capability, training, communication & encouragement and team work) to challenges of total quality management with highly statistically significant correlations P-value (0.000). Recommendations: Continuous controlling for availability of total quality management training program to all nurses at Assuit University Hospitals, andconduct awareness sessions about total quality management for nurses atAssuit University Hospitals.
