Abstract

This study sheds light on Toni Morrison’s novels and their translations and the challenges the translators usually face while translating Toni Morrison into Arabic, with special reference to the three novels of The Bluest Eye, Beloved, and Paradise and their translations, “أكثر العيون زرقة” by Kamel Yusif Hussein, “محبوبة” by Amin Al-Ayouti and “فردوس” by Ali Basha respectively. The study aims at investigating how linguistic, cultural and literary facets of translation provide major challenges in communicating the world of Morrison from English into Arabic. It aims to identify and explore the different challenges translators encounter when translating Morrison and the various translation strategies they have adopted, or evaded while attempting to render Morrison’s rich and challenging novels. It focuses on two main challenges: transferring narrative techniques and rendering cultural aspects prevalent in her novels with reference to translation theories, mainly foreignization and domestication, narration and translation theories and theories of translating cultural references
