Abstract Zinc than healthy subjects, as Zinc has direct role in the development of or possible method of prevention for diabetes, so early assessment and detection of Zinc deficiency in thalassmic patient is with great value, as Insulin activity and release from the pancreas is reduced in zinc deficiency. Zinc is involved not only in the protection of islet cells, but it is also crucial to the many steps of glucose metabolism and insulin signaling. We found significant correlation between serum zinc and insulin sensitivity as zinc activates the insulin-response aminopeptidase (IRAP) molecule, which enables the translocation of GLUT4 to the cell surface for glucose transport into the cell As a result, supplementation with zinc has been shown to decrease hyperglycemia in existing Type II diabetes. Our results revealed increased impaired glucose tolerance in zinc deficient individuals with thalassemia ,so oral glucose tolerance test is challenging in patients with Thalassemia given they may exhibit a combination of decreased insulin secretion and impaired peripheral utilization of glucose in the face of |
