Abstract

Cancer is a deadly disease which remains uncontrollable in most cases. In order to develop efficient controlling strategies for cancer, it is essential that the biological findings be transformed into mathematical models. An excellent survey of this nature has been given by Whittemore (see [1]) and by Keller (see [2]) in 1978. However, biological findings in the past 20 years have invalidated some of the carcinogenesis models (e.g. the Armitage-Doll multistage model, see [3]).In order to develop stochastic models for the processes of carcinogenesis, we proceed this chapter to introduce some useful mathematical tools and present some stochastic processes which are useful in modeling processes of carcinogenesis. The results of this chapter will be used in later chapters to develop stochastic models of carcinogenesis under various biological conditions.
