Abstract

This investigation was carried out to study the importance of ultrasonography as a guide method for aspiration of bone extract in dogs.
This study was carried out on 15 apparently healthy mongrel dogs ( 8 male dogs and 7 female dogs ). The dogs weight was (15 - 25 kg b.wt) and average age was ( 8 - 24 Months) . from the fivteen dogs : three dogs (one male and two females) were used for blind aspiration of bone marrow from humerus , sternum, iliac border and femur to detect the best site to introduce different sizes of aspiration needles for aspiration of bone marrow samples .
Four dogs were undergone three dimensions (3D) computed tomography (C.T) to reveal the length of the inserted needle inside the bone to aspirate marrow samples.
An other 8 dogs were prepared for management of bone marrow collection guided by ultrasonography .
The present experimental study was performed according to the IACUC,AU.
Our results detected that :-
1- The anatomical details of long bones ( humerus and femur ) and flat bones (sternum and ilium) were well showed by bone window of anatomical computed tomography..
2-The Transverse plane showed that, the humerus, femur, ilium is viewed in this plane with clear defined intramedullary cavity and the aspiration needle is obvious through greater tubercle of humerus. While, in sternum this plane was not valuable to detect bone marrow.
3-The three dimensional view cleared that, the long bone ( humerus and femur ) and flat bone (ilium and sternum) were viewed from all directions to detect anatomical sites for needle introduction. The humerus, femur, ilium with this view is anatomically detailed.. Also, the sternum in this view is anatomically detailed as the different length of sternebra and needle insertion in the longest sternebrae 2nd one after manubrium can be detected.
4-The using of ultrsonography was useful for take the way of aspiration simply without tearing of the tissue and avoid any complications from aspiration of bone extract sample.
