Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has become one of the dominant construction materials for sewer systems over the past decades .Therefore, it is necessary to know the current status of the mechanical properties of sewage pipelines in the local market to develop them and avoid defects upon production. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of sewage pipes with the requirements in the Egyptian market. This study presents the results of mechanical testing of four pipes of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. The research is based on international and national standards for sewage systems. The mechanical properties, the fracture toughness and the flattening of sewage water pipes produced by four different local companies (w, sh, u and h) have been studied. The mechanical properties are obtained by conducting a simple tension test at three different crosshead speeds. The obtained results show that, the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity increases with increasing the crosshead speed. The values of tensile strength of companies u and h is very low relative to that for companies w and sh where the tensile strength of u and h is respectively 40 % and 30% of that for companies w and sh. The fracture toughness test was conducted using SEN specimens. The fracture toughness, KIC, for the four companies are 3.25, 3.71, 1.25 and 0.58 MPa.m0.5 for companies w, sh , u and h respectively. In the flattening test of the four pipes w, sh, u and h, pipes w, sh and u deflected up to 50% of the outer diameter without damage while pipe h damaged after a deflection of 45% of the outer diameter. Three test pipes were applicable to the sewage systems, and the fourth one isnot appliacable at all.
