Abstract CPD is that component of learning and self-development that occurs after the formal completion of specialist education. Its function is to ensure that those who work in the health field develop and maintain the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to practice effectively and safely and work towards improving the health of the population. CPD consists of reflective activity designed to improve an individual’s attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills. It supports individual needs and improve professional practice. CPD is esteemed and is seen as successful in producing a desired or intended result when it addresses the needs of health professionals, clinicians, the community they serve and the organizations inside which they work. In any case, the challenge for CPD may lie within the dynamic interaction between educational opportunities and service delivery requirements, as there may be events where they compete with each other for resources. Despite the importance and effectiveness of CPD, its uptake and implementation remain challenging and varies across different settings and specialties. There are several reasons for this such as: time constraint, heavy workload, difficulty in finding replacements and inconvenient location. |
