Abstract

The city of Mallawi has witnessed several stages of morphological, urban, and architectural development since its foundation and down to the present time. Mallwi is one of the most populated cities of Minia and, perhaps, in Egypt. It is littered with a large number of antique buildings and historical palaces, which provide many insightful information about its unqiue past. The historical palaces of Mallawi not only tell about the names and titles of their owners, but they also provide valuable datae on the prevalent contemporary architectural and artistic styles. The predominance of unqiue and distinctive European architectural and decorative styles distinguishes palatial architecture of Mallwi during the nineteenth twentieth and centuries. Such lavish styles still appeare in the well preserved historical palaces and buildings in the city.
However, historical buildings and palaces are not the only physical expressions of civilization during that period for the city’s traditional city has been retained in the old quarters of the city. The city’s traditional layout tells information about the inhabitants’ life during that time, and illustrates the stages of development and urban expansion that the city witnessed. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the city had two different layouts. The oldest quarters of the city are marked by the narrow streets and lanes and crowded markets, while the newest districts are distinguished with wide and straight streets, open spaces, and modern trade centers, malls, and shops.
According to the Egyptian law of monuments, most of the historical buildings and palaces of Mallawi have regrettably not been declared as monuments. Consequently, they have not receivedany maintenance or restoration works, which led to the deterioration of their architecture and decorative program.
The Literature Review
Many previous studies are very informative in the preparation of this thesis. The maps of Mallwi city which were drawn between 1900 AD and 2007 AD is an indispensable source of information about the original layout of the city. This helps to compare it with the present layout through a satellite view to distinguish the original streets and buildings out of the modern ones.
In his master thesis, Ehab Hassan provides a detailed, comprehensive study on the economic and social state of El-Minyā between 1882 and 1952 . Abd El-Mounsef Nagem has similarly presented a detailed study on the palaces of the princes and Pashas in Cairo during the nineteenth century. Since the Cairo palaces bear a remarkable similarity with those of Mallawi, the study of Negmhas been informative for clarifying the distinctive elements on the facades of historic buildings in Minia and identifying European styles of palatial architecture during the 19th and 20th centuries .
Emad el-Den Ali has considered the urban expansion of Mallawi , while Gamal Abd Al-Raouf has focused on the architectural elements and decorative features on the facades of civil architecture in minia during the reign of Mohammed Ali and his dynasty.
In her PhD dissertation, Nesreen Mohamed has particularly considered the history of Minia in the period of Mohammed Ali and his dynasty, calling attention to the unique position of Minia during that time. In my master thesis, I have explored the architectural and decoratives elements of Abd el Mageed Pasha’s palace in Mallawi and its use in the field of tourism .
The Importance of the Study:
Egypt is rich in archaeological and historical monuments, which were built in different ages and found in many cities and villages. Theses monuments range from temples and tombs to domestic properties like houses and historical palace. The urban and rural centers in which these monuments were built, i.e. cities, towns, and villages, underwent essential changes in its urban or rural topography and landscape through the different epochs of its construction and development history. This study attempts to shed the light on the transformation of the city during the 19th and 20th centuries of our common era. It focuses mainly on the natural and human factors, which played a main role in the urban transformation of the city during this critical yet important period of the modern history of Egypt. So far, there is no comprehensive study on the urban development and historical palaces of Mallawi through the 19th and 20th centuries. It is the objectives of the study:
• To highlight the urban transformation of Mallawi during the 19th and 20th centuries AD.
• To fully explore the natural and human factors, which played a decisive role in the urban transformation of the city.
• To identify the factors that actively contribute to urban transformation of the city
• To shed the light on the importance of Mallawi’s palaces and how they deserve to be converted into heritage sites.
• To raise the public awareness of the citizens of Mallawi towards the unique significance of its historical palaces.
• To propose a strategy that may help in the development of historical palaces in Mallawi.
• To make practical suggestions and recommendations for resuing and repurposing historical palaces in appropriate activites
Methodology:
To achieve these objectives, the researcher follows a descriptive and analytical method by first providing a full description of the historical buildings and palaces, and then analyse the architectural and artistic elements used in such buildings. Also highy important for the completion of this study is the field study. I have made intensive visits to Mallwi to study the historical palaces and the surrounding area.
The Division of the Thesis:
The study is divided into an introduction and seven chapters:
The introduction provides a brief historical outline about Mallawi in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The first chapter deals with the urban changes and transformations of the city during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The second chapter considers the socio-economic state of Mallawi during the 19th and 20th centuries. It focuses on the social classes and the level of education in the city during that time, and hence sheds the light on the economic and social importance of the city.
The third chapter dealt with prominent examples of Islamic and historical architecture in Mallawi. It is divided into two parts: The first part considers Islamic architecture like mosques and mausoleums; and the second part explores civil architecture like public buildings and palaces.
The fourth chapter highlights the architectural and artistic styles of the historical palaces. It focuses mainly on the European architectural influences in to Egypt during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The fifth chapter focuses on the architectural elements of the historical palaces, such as doorways, windows, balconies, columns…etc.
The sixth chapter gives a detailed analysis of the decorative elements in these historical palaces, notably the geometrical ornaments, floral ornaments, and human figuratives.
The seventh chapter is a proposal plan for the rehabilitation and reuse of the historical palaces in appropriate activites. The chapter covers the following topics: The concept of reuse and rehabilitation; the principles of reuse and rehabilitation; and the reasons for the reuse and rehabilitation of theses palaces. The study ends with the conclusion and recommendations of the thesis.
