Abstract

Fishing is a dangerous profession in which fishermen face many
health risks, which has a negative impact on the health of fishermen and their
families. Despite scientific and technological progress, there is a lack of information
on health problems faced by fishermen .Study aim; assess health problems and
injuries related to occupational hygiene among fishermen at Ismailia city. Design:
descriptive correlation design was used in this study. Setting; the study was conducted
on fishermen were selected from Ismailia lakes. Sample: convenient sampling from
selected areas, sample size (352). Tools; were used to collect the data through
structure interviewing questionnaire, and health assessment checklist. Results: 90.6%
of the studied fishermen suffering from dryness of the skin, 81.0% having upper limbs
injures (fractures -wound’s). 90.9% of them having cough and 39.8% suffering from
dyspnea. 46% of them had hematuria. There was a statistically significance relation
between total knowledge and skills regarding occupational hygiene and socio￾demographic characteristics of the fishermen with (P<0.0001),Near third quarter of
them reported inflammation of eyes 74.4 % also, most of fishermen reported tinnitus,
gum &dental problems and vomiting respectively (84.7%, 85.5%&83.5%) and clubbing
nails in 90%of them. Conclusion: it can be concluded that most fishermen in the
Ismailia city had poor total knowledge and skills regarding occupational hygiene
especially information regarding prevention of diseases transmitted from fish, personal hygiene as well as poor skills regarding hand washing and use of personal protection
equipment so they are exposed to many hazards ,diseases and disabilities
Recommendation: Raise Fishermen awareness regarding protection of themselves
from hazards to prevent health problems by using PPEs.
