Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth performance, survival and feed efficiency of blue spot mullet or keeled mullet (Valamugil seheli or Liza carinata) when shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is used as secondary species in a polyculture system., In a complete randomized design, all fish were randomly distributed into 15 glass aquaria in 5 treatments (3 aquaria per treatment). In the first treatment (T1: Fish 100%, Monoculture). While in the second treatment (T2: Shrimp 100%, Monoculture), on other hand, the third treatment (T3: Fish 25% and Shrimp 75%, Poly-culture), as well as the fourth treatment (T4: Fish 50% and Shrimp 50%, Poly-culture), In the fifth treatment (T5: Fish 75% and Shrimp, The results of Water quality parameters monitored during the culture period were all within acceptable limits for culturing of L. carinata and L. vannamei, while Total ammonia nitrogen, Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphate in-significantly affected. There are a positive relationship between the number of fish in all treatment and the values of Total ammonia nitrogen, Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphate. While there are a reverse relationship between the number of shrimp in all treatment and the values of Total ammonia nitrogen, Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphate. The survival rate of L. carinata and L. vannamei were non-significant and significant increase in T5, respectively, the average final weight, weight gain, daily weight gain and the specific growth rate of L. carinata was non-significant increase in fish in T5 and T4 in comparison with T1and fish in T3, but, there is non-significant change in the average final weight, weight gain and daily weight gain of L. vannamei in-between monoculture shrimp and other treatment, while there is a non-significant change in K Factor of fish in monoculture and polyculture treatments. On the other way the condition factor of shrimp was significant increase in T3 and T5 in comparison with monoculture shrimp and shrimp in T4.The rates of survival, between treatment, as all was a significant decrease in T2 in comparison with other treatments. The FCR of T1 was a significant higher in comparison with the others treatments, while the FCR of T5 and T4 were significantly increase in comparison with T3 and T2. The PER in T3 was a significant higher than other treatments, while there is a significantly lower of the PER in T1 than other treatments, while the PPV in T2 was a significantly higher than the other treatments, as well as the PPV in T1 and T5 were significant higher in comparison with T3 and T4. The all proximate analysis of fish and shrimp shown a non-significant different in fish in all treatment, except in crude protein and fat of fish in T1 treatment which shown a significant decrease than in fish other poly culture treatment. All blood parameters and serum biochemical tests values of L. carinata at end of experiment shown a significant higher in T1 and T5 in comparison with fish in T3and T4. |
