Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous follicle, caused by both host and environmental factors and microbial components. The pathogenesis of acne is thought to involve an interplay between a number of factors, including excess androgenic stimulation and sebum hypersecretion, abnormal differentiation, proliferation and hyperkeratinization of the epidermal keratinocytes, especially those lining the duct region of the sebaceous unit.
In this study we investigated the possible association between disease , its severity as measured by the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) and the serum lactoferrin level. The GAGS is awidely used method to assess disease severity based on the extent ,location and the types of acne lesions.
The present study include 60 patients with acne vulgaris (30 with mild to moderate level of severity and 30 with moderate to severe level of severity) their ages ranged from 17 to 25 years attending dermatology outpatient clinic in Suez Canal University Hospitals and 20 healthy controls matching with the same age . Serum samples were taken from all patients and from controls. All samples were assessed, calculated and recorded in the questionnaire.
Levels of lactoferrin were detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. This kit uses enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) for the accurate quantification of human lactoferrin disease severity was calculated by Global Acne Grading system (GAGS)
