Abstract Prematurity is a major public health concern because neonatal morbidity and mortality increase significantly as gestational age at birth decreases. Preterm babies are vulnerable to increased risk for death and to many short- and long-term complications of premature birth. In the last 20 years with scientific and technological developments observed in the field of neonatology, the survival rate of premature infants has significantly increased. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the most contributing cause of morbidity and mortality among preterm and term neonates. The greatest risk factor for respiratory distress syndrome is prematurity. Early and appropriate intervention plays a key role in improving survival rate. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) is noninvasive method of maintaining lung inflation. Evidence suggests that the use of nCPAP reduces the need for intubation and surfactant treatment in preterm infants. |
