Abstract

Many dramas focus on the relationships within the family unit. As the family topic illuminates great movements and approaches that examines the family. One of the greatest contributions is Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory. The theory in this thesis is applied to investigate the family dynamics and the effects that the family has on the functioning and behaviors of its members in three of modern dramas: August: Osage County By Tracy Letts, Topdog/Underdog by Suzan Lori parks, and The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonough. The families presented in these plays face a plenty of challenging situations, including: marital conflicts, suicide, disintegration, substance abuse, abandonment, violence, physical deformities, and criminality. The thesis examines the functioning of the family when its members face such several problems. The plays demonstrate that the family is the center of conflict and tension, and their response is sadly predictable. These works definitely draw our attention to the importance of seeking family treatment.
