Abstract

extract : This thesis aims to analyze the rejection speech in the novel ”How to be a Girl’s character” by Caitlin Moran, where specific positions were selected from the novel and analyzed according to the discursive approach to politeness in relation to the exchange of dialogue roles, speech signs, awareness of politeness, and the intention to express rejection, The research data for the rejection strategies were collected through two tools: (1) choosing positions for rejection from the novel and (2) assessment of linguistic behavior, expectations, and perception of what is polite or impolite based on the aforementioned elements of expressing disapproval. The thesis includes six chapters where the first chapter serves as an introduction to the research problem, its questions and objectives. Theoretical framework in the second chapter, which is(1) The role initiative strategy, (2) The role-holding strategy, (3) The turn delivery strategy, and the fourth chapter analyzes how Morne employs discourse markers in her novel “How to Build a Girl?” The chapter explains the different functions of discourse markers used in dialogues and Multiple situations in the novel, and the chapter deals with how Morne uses the structural and functional features of the discourse signs in the novel, based on the theoretical framework discussed in the second chapter. The fifth chapter analyzed the refusal strategies employed by Morn in the novel “How to Build a Girl?”, and for this purpose, a number of refusal positions were selected and analyzed based on the inductive approach to politeness as explained in the theoretical framework in Chapter Two, and the conclusion aims to answer the Research questions in order to reach the conclusion and provide suggested recommendations for studies that could be conducted in the future.
