Abstract The present study was carried on 10 adult healthy mongrel dogs of both sexes (5 males and 5 non-pregnant, non-lactating females). The animals classified randomly into 2 groups 5 dogs for each group. In group 1, the animals were exposed to complete resection of the third eyelid of the left eye while the right eye was left as a control. In group 2, the animals were exposed to excision of nictitans gland of the third eyelid of the left eye while the right eye was left as control. Dogs were evaluated during follow up period of 7 months. Evaluation criteria included gross examination, tear PH values, Schermmier tear test I, fluorescein staining and histopathological examination of the ocular surface. The results of the present study showed slight hyperemia of bulbar conjunctiva in first few weeks in some animals without any inflammatory exudate. Tear production decreased in the first few weeks, then return to normal value. The cornea appears normal during the time of the study. Histopathological examination revealed normal ocular surface of the operated eye. In conclusion neither excision of the third eyelid nor the nictitans gland induced the development of KCS or affected the ocular surface integrity. |
