Abstract

This study aimed at detecting the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms during pregnancy in Beni-Suef Governorate and the risk factors associated with anxiety and depression during pregnancy.
The study is a cross-sectional study conducted in Beni-Suef Governorate on a number of 434 pregnant women attending for their routine antenatal checkups in any of the six health care facilities which were randomly selected: El-kom El ahmar, El-Mermah health care centers, El Ghamrawy and Sharq El-Nile health offices in Beni-Suef city,
Bani-adi primary health care center and Naser health office from Naser city, in addition the antenatal care clinic of Beni-Suef University Hospital.
A structured questionnaire prepared in Arabic language, the Arabic version of Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HDRS) were used to study anxiety and depressive symptoms in pregnancy
The present study showed a high prevalence of prenatal depressive symptoms (73.5%) and its occurrence is associated with the pregnant woman’s residence, age and occupation, as well as Gender of her Children, history of complications in previous pregnancies, current complicated pregnancy, history of psychiatric symptoms in a previous pregnancy, postpartum depression, Psychiatric symptoms in the current pregnancy and family history of Psychiatric disorder.
In addition, the prevalence of anxiety symptoms is 33.9% and its occurrence is linked to residence of the pregnant woman, presence of complications in previous pregnancies
(P-value: 0.021), current complicated pregnancy (P-value=0.001), History of Psychiatric symptoms in a previous pregnancy, postpartum depression, Psychiatric symptoms in the current pregnancy and Family History of Psychiatric disorder.
These results reveals clearly the need for; antenatal preventive health care programs to improve and support the mental health of pregnant women, proper health education programs for pregnant women about depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy and how to avoid these problems.
