Abstract
Anemia is a widespread public health problem, and iron deficiency is the most common reason of anemia. It may have harmful effects in patients with different ocular disorders throughout exacerbation of effects of ischemia. The cause of iron-deficiency anemia varies based on age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Iron deficiency may result from inadequate iron intake, decreased iron absorption, increased iron demand and increased iron loss.
This study was performed on120 eyes of 60 participants including 30 patients with IDA and 30 healthy individuals as control group. Each subject had a standard ophthalmological examination. RNFL thickness measurements were performed using optical coherence tomography.
The studied patients were selected according to the following inclusion and exclusion criteria:
Inclusion criteria: including same age group (15_30 years old) cases, Diagnosis of IDA was determined after Hb analysis.
Exclusion criteria: any corneal and vitreous opacities, Preexisting retinal or optic nerve pathologies, cases having other ocular disorders as glaucoma, uveitis, ocular hypertension, eyes with history of preceding ocular surgery or traumas, cases with any type of preceding retinal treatments (macular laser, photo-coagulation, vitrectomy and/or intravitreal steroid), any systemic disorders other than IDA and cases with squint or amblyopia were excluded in this study.
