Abstract Regarding the endocrine system, the thyroid is considered one of the essential and unique glands in human body. Its main function is to synthesize and release thyroid hormones including triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are crucial for carbohydrates, lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis in order to maintain normal development. It is worth mentioning that thyroid hormones have proven their effective protective role in oxidative stress, as they regulate levels of antioxidants in the body. Thyroid gland is involved in the control of several physiological functions including metabolism, neuronal development, bone remodeling, and cardiac functions. As a result, variations in thyroid hormone levels may have a major impact on human health. Understanding thyroid gland histology and functions is beneficial for knowing how specific drug interact with thyroid. |
