Abstract

It considers the development of the processional route of Egyptian temples under Greek and Roman rule. Chapter I sheds the light on the terminology of the dromos and its development in the Delta region. Chapter II discusses the dromos of the Egyptian temples in the Arsinote and the Heptanomai nomes. Chapter III explores the dromos of the Egyptian temples in the Thebaide nome. Chapter IV explores the festivals and celebrations that were performed on or along the dromos or benefited from the structure in public processions. Chapter V discusses the religious structures and economic activities attested along the dromos. The final chapter considers the public structures and daily life activities confirmed along the dromos of the temples in the Graeco-Roman Period. In the conclusion, I argue that the dromos was more than an architectural and spatial element of the temple, not only forming a prominent frontage structure of temple architecture, but it was also a monumental focal point and focus of different kinds of political, socio-economic, and religious structures and activities that enlivened the life of inhabitants.
