Abstract

In this study, 202 cases of upper respiratory tract lesions were collected from Pathology department, Beni-Suef University Hospital in the period from June, 2017 to June, 2021 and were studied histopatholgically and 59 out of them with squamous morphology were also studied immunohistochemically for HPV expression. Also, PAS special stain was used for detection of any suspected fungal infection.
Age of the participants ranged from 2.5 to 83 years with the mean age of 40.8 years. More than half of them were in the age category from 21 to 50 years. Females were slightly more predominant (55.9%). The nasal and sinonasal lesions were 70.3% of cases, 26.7% were laryngeal lesions and 3% were pharyngeal lesions. Neoplastic lesions, vocal cord polyps and laryngeal carcinoma were more common in older age and in males. There was a significant association between fungal rhinosinusitis and female sex. Nasal polyps are more common in younger age.
The most prevalent lesion was nasal polyp (39.1%) followed by vocal polyp (15.8%). There was a significant association of squamous metaplasia with nasal polyps and also, vocal cord polyps were significantly associated with dysplasia.
HPV immunostaining was positive in only one case of inverted sinonasal papilloma.
