Abstract

The reuse of the tertiary treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation is one of the most fundamental procedures used to reduce the scarcity of freshwater. In this study, different filtration media of sand, anthracite, granular activated carbon (GAC), and rice straw were examined, with a sub-base of gradual gravel supporting each filtration media. Filtration efficiency was evaluated and compared with water quality standards for agricultural purposes. The different filtration rates were considered to obtain optimum operating conditions after ensuring that the treated wastewater meets standard specifications for irrigation. The results indicated that the filtration rate of 175 m/day produced the optimal quality of treated wastewater as per the standard specifications of irrigation water. The results indicated that the anthracite-sand media produces the best removal efficiencies of the tertiary treated wastewater parameters, i.e. 69% of TSS, 67% of BOD5, 65% of COD, and 50% of NO3 at the optimum filtration rate.
