Abstract The objective of this work is to assess the water quality in Edku Lake for various purposes and know the factors affecting water quality using water quality index models, evaluation of phosphate removal from Edku Lake by nanoscale lime based solid waste , assess the groundwater around Edku Lake for drinking and irrigation by water quality index , assess the soil degradation status around Edku Lake by chemical degradation index and biological degradation index. The results of samples analysis showed that all zones in Edku Lake were described by ”Medium” according to irrigation water quality index for irrigation. Also, the lake water is ”poor” for irrigation according to weighted arithmetic water quality index. Also the effect of adding nanoscale lime based solid waste to Edku Lake water samples was studied, and the results showed that 87% of the phosphate concentration in Edku Lake water samples was removed. Also, All wells around Edku Lake were unsuitable for drinking according to canadian council of ministers of the environment water quality index and weighted arithmetic water quality index. According to irrigation water quality index 89% of groundwater samples were classified as ”medium” for irrigation, but According to weighted arithmetic water quality index 78% of groundwater samples were classified as ”very poor ” for irrigation. The results of soil chemical degradation index showed that 17% of the study area was soil of medium chemical degradation, and 29% of the study area was soil of high chemical degradation, while 54% of the study area was soil of very high chemical degradation. Also 58% of the study area was soil of medium biological degradation, and 42% of the study area was soil of high biological degradation. |
